AFP. International guerrillas (Turks, Syrians, and Moroccans) serving in Iraq confessed they were paid to fight. Does this constitute a mercenary market? It really depends on the ultimate motivation. If money is the driving factor, they are mercenaries. In a growing number of cases the mercenary label probably applies. This will be an important area to watch. A mercenary market will work well for al Qaeda if it moves to systems attacks -- the casualties are lower and the potential for financial gain is higher (due to financial plays that gain from damaged systems, although the applicability of this technique is best used outside of Iraq). NOTE: Lawrence's Arab revolt was composed mainly of "mercenary" forces that required loot in payment for their service.
