Southwestern Pakistan. Baluch tribesmen, disenfranchised from the resource wealth produced by their province (see the brief Primary Loyalties for more), staged multiple attacks nearly a week ago on the Sui natural gas purification plant and its associated pipelines. Damage to the plant was extensive enough to shut it down. They also hit power lines and a telephone exchange which led to high levels of confusion (which helped to limit repair work). The plant, owned by the state-run Pakistan Petroleum Limited, produces 45% of Pakistan's natural gas. The shut down has caused shortages throughout the country -- the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines company has shut down deliveries to power plants and factories in the region (see the brief Infrastructure Meltdowns for more).
