The torrential spread of a new pig virus in China is made more dangerous due to a lack of information we currently have on the epidemic. This is yet another demonstration of the misalignment between our expensive national security system and our needs (as its customer$).
Of course, for those of us that understand that the likelihood that the government's cavalry will arrive to save the day is nearing zero (in response to the full spectrum of threats), this will come as no surprise.
I have to ask: What do you mean by "black swans"? I have a feeling that I'm missing something here...

When you hear hoofbeats, you don't usually think of zebras. I guess we have to be our own cavalry. One measure of our readiness will be now soon we can adapt the bird flu open source hive mind preparedness model to this new pig virus.

A good reference on this is Mike Davis' "Monster at Our Door". A bit from Village Voice here: http://www.villagevoice.com/books/0537,tuhusdubr,67713,10.html
He describes the "cities" of chickens defecating directly into the industrical scale hordes of pigs below and the issues of DNA and trans-species viruses so even I can understand it.
