Yawn; Wrong targets. Civil disturbances of this sort work against one's own government and thus our only effective when targeting ones own government. Case in point, imagine if hundreds of thousands israelis get on the street to protest with signs saying "no more hamas" or vice versa. Effectiveness? Somewhere between jack and squat, but leaning more towards squat. Columbia is an extreme example of urban/rural divide, the urban dwellers have traditional dominated the rural countryside on extremely unfavourable terms. Recall that columbia's brushfire war has been going for generations. FARC is one of a number of rural militias fighting for autonomy from central control. It garners most of the headlines because it's the largest and most effective, it has base of support in urban columbia, it doesn't need nor particularly care for popular opinion amongst urban columbians, what it does need is them to fear FARC. Fear will bring people out on the streets to protest, which will put pressure on the government in bogota to either step up the war or make more concessions to FARC. Both courses of action will make FARC stronger. Facebook seems to have proven to be more than useless today, it just enabled FARC to disrupt it's enemy with firing a shot. Can you say "own goal".

I think the most important takeaway point in the "evolution" of "Global Guerrillas" is what Bob Baer said about the arc of transformation from a terrorist organization to a more legitimate one coupled w/ political power such as military organization and even a political one such as Hamas/Hezbollah. FARC is about right there... It maybe some degree of suoperempowerment but i rathe call it a jump of/to legitimacy.
