I continue to get push back from people who assert that "it is really too hard" to hack biology in a garage, or too expensive, or that garage labs just can't be up to snuff. This sort of dissent usually comes out of National Labs, Ivy League professors, or denizens of the beltway. All I can say to this is -- Doodz, you need to get out more. Rob Carlson (see more: Carlson Curves and Bioterror).
Rob spent some time in a garage biolab (good guys) that is really off the hook (read the whole post at his site). Labs of this type can produce very bad things (via error or intent). They are also necessary to push the tech forward (if it can be done, it will be). The problem is that they can't coexist with a fully integrated global (or even national) system of the type we have today. The only way out is networked resilient communities.
NOTE: Here's a DIY clean room hack and some good ideas on how to test its integrity. Very cool.
