RSS comments to replace Trackbacks

Looks like Scoble is testing an automated trackback system (yah!). Frankly, Trackback is a broken technology since too many people can spam your site with anonymous pings (I spent an hour over the past two weeks deleting spammed trackbacks). A system that pulls comments/trackbacks from qualified weblogs is exactly what the doctor ordered. A simple search of posts that ping a central server (like weblogs.com) would automatically generate trackbacks. In order to prevent spam work-arounds to this system I think it would need:
  • A newness filter (so spammers would need at least a couple of weeks of posts to generate comments/trackbacks in the system).
  • A reputation system (so spam blogs could get the axe before they cause too many problems).
There are probably more things on this list. If I have time, I will write it up.

Shouldn't Technorati be able to do this already?

Technorati is able to do this, sure. See e.g. Tim Bray's blog for an example (google for "ongoing").
