Interesting distinction between "robustness" (i.e., pre-designed tolerance) and "resilience" (which I take it you define as the ability to tolerate *unanticipated* shocks). Not sure I agree, but this is certainly worth pondering.

As for Mr. Orlov's observations, I do not buy his fundamental premise the "all empires collapse" -- nor do I concur with the notion that the U.S. is a militaristic hegemon (the core meaning behind the Latin root "imperium").

The key question is, can an entity (be it an organism or a nation-state) adapt to changing conditions -- dare I say, demonstrate "resilience"? :-) -- in order to thrive? That will determine whether or not we are destined for collapse.
