Some personal fabrication plus this simple solar design that cuts down on complex components might be great for the RC on an open source basis.

One wonders if this might somehow be integrated into J Baldwin's Pillow Dome concept:

Perhaps replaceable panels that can be swapped with the changing seasons to permit solar heating and insulation in the winter but provide electricity, shade and insulation in the summer.
