Here's an excellent animated graphic depicting the spread of Walmart across the US. It shows how globalization spread at the local level. We are likely going to see a reverse of this process as resilient communities spread. Note that unlike the centralized network of Walmart, these communities will be connected through a myriad of open source networks (online) that will enable rapid technological tinkering (from fabrication to agriculture), security, trading, and financing (thanks Jamais).
NOTE: Resilient communities are a self-organizing response to global system failure. In thermodynamic terms, for those that like this model, RCs are a high evolved dissipative structure that replaces a closed thermodynamic system on its way to equilibrium (heat death).
