The Sovereign Man group (a newsletter/service catering to ex-patriots) is in the process of setting up a resilient community in central Chile on 20,000 acres (amazing location with weather similar to Silicon Valley).
Earlier this spring, I gave the keynote speech at their first conference in Panama City, Panama. Since the speech was about resilient communities, and why investing in them is smarter than buying gold or a cabin in the woods given the global disruption that's coming, it was a good test of the demand for actually building one in a select location. It appears there was a significant amount of demand, and the project is moving ahead at full steam (from "Simon Black" the nom de guerre of the Sovereign Man's CEO):
We're in the early stages of establishing a resilient community in central Chile where the scenery is stunning, the climate is warm (Mediterranean), and the soil is some of the most fertile in the world. Oh yeah, and the government leaves you alone too. Just yesterday, in fact, I gave instructions for the farm crew to begin planting our first batch of organic crops (remember, the seasons are flipped in the southern hemisphere). We also have multiple sources of water and several ways to generate our own energy, including solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal.
They've really taken my survive and thrive motto to heart.
