One of the most important things you can do to...
- save money,
- increase your degrees of freedom, and
- become more resilience
is to find ways to make a living on-line. I'm not talking about those get rich quick schemes and scams you see on TV or advertised on-line. I'm talking about real work. Here's more detail:
- save money: most of us spend upwards of 20% of the pretax income on automobiles. They also spend exorbitant amounts for homes that are near big cities (and have great school districts, which is hard to do). You can take back the opportunity cost of commuting. Being able to live in a place that is less expensive and/or doesn't a car is a big win.
- increase your degrees of freedom: this means that you can easily change the parameters of your work. The big one is that you can work with anybody no matter where they live in the world (nearly instantly) You can work four part time jobs or one big one (switching between them without cost in time/energy/etc.). You can work in the evening or early in the morning w/o regard to office hours, commute, etc.
- become more resilient: by gaining degrees of freedom you can live in any resilient community you want to live in. You can live in a libertarian RC in Chile or a cooperative resilient community in northern California. Also, given the potential cost reductions, you can spend more of your time improving the productive capacity of your home/community (making the long term investments necessary to radically outpace those still failing to make progress in the global economic system).
