Israel is like a poker player that went all in off the first card and watched while each new card gave their opponents a better hand.

Israel chose the stakes in this one. If they had limited their response to the kidnapping of their soldiers, this would have played out as one of several border skirmishes and not changed much else. That's all Hezbollah had planned for. By going for big stakes, they set themselves up to become big losers.

Unfortunately, that's unlikely to cause those who cheered on this strategy of disproportionate responses to maintain deterrence to rethink the method or the likely results.
