Johnson is a good researcher but a poor analyst in that he tends to begin with a conclusion and throw a kitchen sink of information at the reader that supports his thesis while ignoring large an obvious contraindicatory examples. Case in point.

" History tells us that one of the most unstable political combinations is a country - like the United States today - that tries to be a domestic democracy and a foreign imperialist"

Perhaps the man has heard of Great Britain ? It became *more* rather than *less* democratic as its empire grew larger.
